RIP TPB

This week brings more death, this time to one of the most popular torrent sites known on the web, The Pirate Bay. The battle between the creators of TPB and the Swedish Court has been well underway for awhile now, striking a heavy blow to TPB for copyright infringement fine in excess of around $3.6 mil USD. After continually saying they weren't gonna pay the huge fine and take it further down the court system, it looks like all of a sudden they sold off the site to some Swedish software firm called "Global Gaming Factory X" (welcome to the Xander Zone!!) for $7.7 mil USD.

The software firm said that they plan on turning TPB into a legal version of it's former self, hoping to pay the copyright holders for whatever is posted on the site in the future (sounds like it may be subscription based). TPB founders haven't said too much, other than they sold it as a means to help keep the site going. I assume that they either got fed up with the whole thing and caved in, or are planning for the future since they were all sentenced to spend at least 1 year in jail (coupled with the 3.6 mil fine). Either way, TPB as a free source of torrents is effectively killed, RIP TPB.

MGS goes PSN

While MS is plugging their Xbox Originals, Sony goes ahead and adds Metal Gear Solid to the PSN store as a downloadable title (for PS3 and PSP) at the price of just 10 bucks. This game is considered a relic by me and many, many other people and I'll probably get it again just so I can have a copy saved on my PS3 whenever I feel like going back to my roots. Now if I could just finish FFVII that I just got off of PSN without feeling like Im cheating on FFXI behind it's back...

Xbox OG Store

It looks like MS is pulling the plug on the Xbox Originals store which is kind of a shame really. It's got some decent games on there that are actually worth the 10-15 bucks you'd pay for em. I was kinda hoping they'd keep adding to it and eventually release some sports titles like 2K Sports NFL 2k5, now that was a football game...Anyway as far as what's on there right now will be staying up with one more Xbox original title waiting to be added, which they haven't announced the title yet.

MS Rumors 360 1/2?

With all this new stuff coming out here and there, its kind of easy to overlook the fact that we haven't had a new gaming console come out for a long time. Long gone are the days of the rinse and repeat 3 year cycles, the 360 is coming up on 5 years almost and still going strong with titles like Modern Warfare 2, Forza 3, and Fight Night 4 coming out soon, not to mention your random motion-sensing game for the Wii which everyone seems to buy for their kids and even the PS3 is starting to get back on it's feet with games like Last Guardian and FFXIII being released. This doesn't even include the DLC we've had and will be getting in the future which in itself has proven it is a viable source of gaming.

Now if MS came out and said "The Xbox Allard is coming out in 2XXX, BAM!" it certainly would peak an interest, but it would have to be substantially better than the 360/PS3 for it to sell right? No one would buy a new nex-nex-gen console if it didn't look at least 2x better, better games, control, everything. I mean, that's how it's always been. Can you think of a better Xbox 360 that you could get for around $500? Hard, huh.

Now imagine that with the pricepoint so low of todays nex-gen consoles, you could moderately "upgrade" the internals of the same system. Then announce that it runs faster, better, and is backwards compatible plus features new hardware that can let future games take advantage of. Then...bundle it with a new motion-sensing capability that was previously lacking from the original console. Would you buy it for $499?

All of this is regarding a rumor that 1UP digged up about Microsoft planning to release a new Xbox next year.
